How Wellpath trains 90% faster with Synthesia
Wellpath provides care in correctional facilities across 37 states, and every new nurse has to learn its clinical software. Synthesia empowers its trainers, none of them video pros, to deliver training right inside the software nurses use daily.

Wellpath is the premier provider of localized, high-quality, compassionate care to vulnerable patients in challenging clinical environments. With more than 8,000 clinicians and professionals in 37 states across the U.S., Wellpath provides medical and mental healthcare services for over 200,000 patients daily in local, state, and federal correctional facilities.Β
Industry context
Correctional healthcare operates under conditions most clinical settings never encounter, across facilities that vary widely in size, population, and need. For a team responsible for training clinicians on critical software, that means a training landscape that constantly shifts.Β
The challenge
Every new nurse needs to learn Wellpath's training system. With new nurses joining regularly, that demand is constant, and the window to get someone equipped and confident is short.
The original model was live virtual training, two to four hours per session. The bigger issue was relevance: a nurse who needed to process an intake sat through the full curriculum to reach the ten minutes that applied to them.
"The feedback we were getting was: I only needed to know how to do prescriptions, or how to do an intake on a patient. I didn't need to sit through the whole training, but I did, because my part didn't come until the end." β Anthony Lopez, Senior Director of Product and Delivery, Wellpath
The team moved to pre-recorded video, which helped with scheduling but introduced its own problems. Recording meant a microphone, a camera, and someone screen-sharing while reading a script, hoping they didn't stumble or navigate to the wrong screen. They worked that way for a couple of years, but the content never became something people sought out.
When the team began evaluating AI video tools, the deciding factor was who would use them. Wellpath's trainers are clinical support specialists, not video producers, and most platforms they tested assumed editing expertise they neither had nor needed.
The solution
Synthesia came through a recommendation, and the first thing the team noticed was how quickly the team picked it up.
"It was as easy as creating a PowerPoint. The notion of slides, just dragging and dropping content, was intuitive. Pretty quickly we realized we really only need a script, our screenshots, and our screen recordings, and we could be off to the races." β Anthony Lopez, Senior Director of Product and Delivery, Wellpath
The team built a few one-to-two-minute snippets with Avatars and sent them to users they trusted for honest feedback. The response reshaped the approach: users wanted the videos embedded directly in the software itself.
That became the model. Rather than a library people had to navigate to, Wellpath placed context-specific videos throughout the clinical software. A play button icon appears across the platform, and clicking it launches a short video covering exactly that function, whether searching for a patient or ordering a medication. Training now arrives at the moment of need.
Wellpath also built a brand kit with company colors and logos, and even branded the avatar's shirt.
"It looks like Wellpath created it from scratch, because we did. Nothing about it feels bolted on. It was meant to be part of our tools." β Anthony Lopez, Senior Director of Product and Delivery, Wellpath
Most of Wellpath's trainers don't hold clinical licenses, so they can explain how a function works but may miss the reasoning behind why a nurse would use it a particular way. By inviting clinical stakeholders to review and comment directly in Synthesia, the team builds that context into the training.Β
"Our business partners can give us real-time feedback inside Synthesia. This context makes the training far more applicable in the field." β Anthony Lopez, Senior Director of Product and Delivery, Wellpath
The results
- 90% faster production turnaround
- 50+ videos across short-form snippets and medium-length training
- 800-1,000 views per weekΒ
- Fewer one-off training requests, freeing the team for higher-value work
- Adoption beyond training, with product announcements and internal IT support content now built in Synthesia
What's next
"The shorter form content just works. Our training videos are now one to two minutes long and tell nurses exactly what they need to know at that moment." β Anthony Lopez, Senior Director of Product and Delivery, Wellpath
That principle now drives the next phase. Wellpath's full end-to-end training is being rebuilt as a modular library, turning the two-hour session into targeted segments clinicians can move through at their own pace. Anthony is also encouraging his team to diversify the avatars they use as the library grows.
