The 5 Best Tavus Alternatives in 2026

Video ProducerΒ at Synthesia

Create AI videos with 240+ avatars in 140+ languages

What are the best alternatives to Tavus?

  • Synthesia: Best for realistic interactive avatars inside a complete AI video platform
  • Anam: Best for natural-feeling conversations and production diagnostics
  • HeyGen LiveAvatar: Best for flexible deployment and fast prototypes
  • LemonSlice: Best for full-body characters that gesture and act
  • D-ID: Best for private-cloud and on-prem deployment

Tavus is a conversational AI agent platform. It combines its Conversational Video Interface (CVI) with PALs, its agent layer, so you get the avatar and the agent from one vendor.

It has the broadest built-in agent features of any interactive avatar platform. That includes a knowledge base, per-participant memory, perception, tools, MCP connectors, in-call UI (Magic Canvas) and meeting participation (docs).

But that breadth comes with trade-offs that lead some teams to look elsewhere.

Common limitations of Tavus

  • Lowest conversation scores we recorded. In our 609-conversation evaluation, Tavus scored lowest of the four platforms tested on overall experience (0.08), responsiveness (0.11) and interruptibility (0.18). The evaluation predates its Phoenix-4.5 release, so test the current model yourself.
  • Reliability at scale. One customer in our research, running Tavus at scale, reported unpredictable cold starts, latency variance under load, and limited visibility into frame rate, concurrency and tail latency.
  • Higher per-minute cost. Included minutes work out to about $0.24–$0.37/min, and each conversation has a 30-second minimum charge. The $22 Starter plan has no pay-as-you-go option once you run out of minutes (pricing).
  • Low concurrency on self-serve plans. Plans allow 1 to 15 concurrent sessions.
  • English-only knowledge base. Tavus's knowledge base only supports English-language documents.

Below are the five best Tavus alternatives, with what each one does better and where it falls short.

We make Synthesia. It's ranked first here, so we've been clear about how we evaluated each tool and where our evidence comes from.

How we evaluated these alternatives

Human evaluation. In July 2026, 157 raters scored 609 conversations with Synthesia, Tavus, Anam and HeyGen LiveAvatar. Every platform ran the same short conversational guessing game through the same rating interface. Raters scored visual quality, lip sync, naturalness, responsiveness, interruptibility and overall experience on a βˆ’2 to +2 scale. [CHECK: evaluation sign-off] Full results are in our Synthesia vs HeyGen vs Tavus vs Anam comparison.

Public documentation. LemonSlice and D-ID weren't part of that evaluation. For every tool, features, pricing and limits come from vendor websites, docs and press releases as of October 6, 2026, and are linked throughout. Performance figures a vendor publishes about itself are labeled as vendor claims.

We compared each tool with Tavus on avatar realism, conversation quality, built-in agent features, deployment options, scale and price.

1. Synthesia

URL: https://www.synthesia.io/features/avatars/interactive-avatars

Quick summary

  • Visual quality (our eval): 0.95, highest tested (Tavus: 0.42)
  • Overall experience (our eval): 0.48, highest tested (Tavus: 0.08)
  • Best use case: Realistic customer-facing avatars, training and enterprise deployments
  • Biggest limitation: Bust framing only, and fewer built-in agent features than Tavus
  • Price: $0.20/min (widget) Β· $0.10/min (API, avatar only)

Pros

Synthesia's avatars had the highest visual quality in our evaluation, at 0.95 against 0.34–0.70 for the others. They also had the highest average on 5 of the 6 dimensions we tested. The avatars range from photorealistic people to stylized characters and mascots.

There are two ways to deploy:

  • Interactive Avatars Widget: create an agent in Synthesia, ground it on a PDF and embed it on your site. Synthesia runs speech recognition, the LLM, voice, rendering and streaming.
  • Interactive Avatars API: attach a Synthesia avatar to your own AI agent with the LiveKit Agents plugin, keeping your own LLM, tools, knowledge base and speech providers.

All paid plans support up to 100 concurrent sessions, with custom limits above that (docs). Synthesia holds SOC 2 Type II plus ISO 27001, ISO 27701 and ISO 42001 certification (security).

The avatars come from the same platform used by over 90% of the Fortune 100 for AI video. You can use them across training videos, localized content and Roleplay Sessions as well as live conversations.

Cons

Synthesia's documentation lists its current limits:

  • bust framing only, with no gesture, hand or full-body control;
  • the API runs on LiveKit only;
  • no session list, transcripts or recordings through the API;
  • mobile isn't a primary target.

Through the API, knowledge, memory and tools are built by you, not provided natively. The widget's launch scope is limited to PDF grounding and a small initial set of tools.

Verdict

Synthesia is the best Tavus alternative if avatar realism and conversation quality matter more than built-in agent features, or if you already run your own AI agent.

How does Synthesia compare to Tavus?

In our evaluation, Synthesia outscored Tavus on every dimension. The evaluation predates Tavus's Phoenix-4.5 release.

DimensionSynthesiaTavus
Overall experience0.480.08
Visual quality0.950.42
Responsiveness0.650.11
Lip sync0.320.11
Naturalness0.22βˆ’0.19
Interruptibility0.600.18

Tavus has far more built in: memory, perception, MCP, Magic Canvas and meeting participation. With Synthesia's API, you bring those through your own agent.

Synthesia costs less per minute: $0.10/min avatar-only or $0.20/min for the full widget stack, against about $0.24–$0.37/min for Tavus. It also allows 100 concurrent sessions on every paid plan, against 1–15 for Tavus.

2. Anam

URL: https://anam.ai/interactive-avatars

Quick summary

  • Lip sync (our eval): 0.60, highest tested (Tavus: 0.11)
  • Overall experience (our eval): 0.42, statistically tied for highest (Tavus: 0.08)
  • Best use case: Conversational assistants that need performance diagnostics in production
  • Biggest limitation: Fewer built-in agent features than Tavus, and no documented cross-session memory
  • Price: From $12/mo; $0.11–$0.16/min for extra minutes

Pros

Anam had the best lip sync in our evaluation (0.60), and its overall-experience score (0.42) was statistically tied with Synthesia's. In hands-on testing, its listening behavior stood out: nods, eyebrow movement, smiles and quick reactions when interrupted.

Anam offers both a turnkey stack and bring-your-own components (API). It covers the core agent features many Tavus users rely on: RAG with retrieval controls, client, webhook and system tools, and meeting participation in Google Meet, Zoom and Teams (changelog).

Its standout is diagnostics. Anam's session analytics break each turn into speech-to-text, LLM and text-to-speech latency. They also show p50–p99 percentiles, error and interruption rates, and the slowest turns. That's the kind of visibility one Tavus customer in our research said was missing.

Avatars are created from a single photo, with clothing, background and logo editing. Anam supports 70+ languages with mid-session switching. It has a SOC 2 Type II report and HIPAA-aligned controls, with zero data retention and EU/US regions on Enterprise (AI governance).

Cons

Anam doesn't document cross-session memory, perception or in-call UI, all of which Tavus has. Its analytics don't cover LiveKit or audio-passthrough sessions. Self-serve plans allow 1–10 concurrent sessions, and Anam's own latency benchmark puts median time to first frame at 1.55 s.

Verdict

Anam is the best Tavus alternative for teams that want a more natural-feeling conversation and better production visibility, and can live without Tavus's deepest agent features.

How does Anam compare to Tavus?

Anam scored higher than Tavus on all six dimensions in our evaluation. The biggest gaps were lip sync (0.60 vs. 0.11), overall experience (0.42 vs. 0.08) and interruptibility (0.52 vs. 0.18). The evaluation predates Tavus's Phoenix-4.5 release.

Anam is also cheaper, at $0.11–$0.16 per extra minute against about $0.24–$0.37/min on Tavus's included minutes. Tavus has more built in: per-participant memory, perception-triggered tools, MCP connectors and Magic Canvas.

3. HeyGen LiveAvatar

URL: https://www.liveavatar.com/

Quick summary

  • Overall experience (our eval): 0.15 (Tavus: 0.08)
  • Responsiveness (our eval): 0.43 (Tavus: 0.11)
  • Best use case: Flexible deployment and fast prototypes
  • Biggest limitation: Lowest naturalness score in our evaluation (βˆ’0.38), and no documented tool calling
  • Price: ~$0.08–$0.10/min avatar-only Β· ~$0.16–$0.19/min full stack

Pros

HeyGen LiveAvatar has two modes. Avatar-only (LITE) mode puts an avatar on your own conversational stack. FULL mode bundles speech recognition, an LLM, text-to-speech and voice activity detection.

It has the broadest integration options of any tool here. There are plugins for LiveKit, Pipecat/Daily, Agora and VisionAgents, plus hosted connectors for ElevenLabs, Cartesia, OpenAI Realtime and Gemini Live. It also supports any OpenAI-compatible LLM endpoint, a hosted embed and a free sandbox mode.

Paid plans include unlimited concurrency, and enterprise rates go down to $0.01/min. HeyGen holds SOC 2 Type II, GDPR and CCPA compliance (GDPR page).

Cons

LiveAvatar had the lowest naturalness score in our evaluation (βˆ’0.38), and customers in our research reported turn-taking problems and false starts. It doesn't document tool calling, and FULL-mode memory is a single rolled-up summary. Sessions are capped at 20 minutes on Essential and 60 on Business.

Verdict

HeyGen LiveAvatar is the best Tavus alternative if you want lower cost, more integration options and higher concurrency, and plan to supply your own agent logic.

How does HeyGen LiveAvatar compare to Tavus?

In our evaluation, LiveAvatar scored higher than Tavus on overall experience (0.15 vs. 0.08), responsiveness (0.43 vs. 0.11) and interruptibility (0.54 vs. 0.18). Tavus scored higher on visual quality (0.42 vs. 0.34), lip sync (0.11 vs. 0.07) and naturalness (βˆ’0.19 vs. βˆ’0.38), and has since released Phoenix-4.5.

LiveAvatar is cheaper and offers unlimited concurrency on paid plans. Tavus has far more built-in agent features, including memory, tools, perception, MCP and in-call UI, none of which LiveAvatar documents.

4. LemonSlice

URL: https://lemonslice.com/

Quick summary

  • Not in our evaluation
  • Best use case: Full-body characters, mascots and cartoons that gesture and act
  • Biggest limitation: API access to its latest character models requires the Ultra ($960/mo) or Enterprise plan
  • Price: From $8/mo; CWM-1 Lite from $0.048/min on Ultra

Pros

LemonSlice creates live avatars from a single image: photorealistic people, illustrated characters, cartoons, animals and brand mascots. It's the only alternative here that animates the full body.

Its Character World Model-1 (CWM-1), released September 23, 2026, generates the face, body, hands and surrounding scene live. It includes:

  • animated backgrounds;
  • hand and object interaction;
  • cloth and hair physics;
  • an emotion engine that picks expressions from the conversation;
  • actions such as smiling, waving or crossing arms, which developers can trigger with tool calls.

LemonSlice says CWM-1 streams for 24+ hours without visible drift. CWM-1 Lite offers the same controls from as low as $0.048/min. Both are vendor claims.

You can bring your own conversational stack (via LiveKit, Daily/Pipecat, Agora, a WebSocket or ElevenLabs Agents) or add hosted speech, LLM and voice for +$0.09/min. LemonSlice powers a life-size conversational Theodore Roosevelt avatar, built with Microsoft for the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library.

Cons

API access to CWM-1, CWM-1 Lite and 2.1 Flash requires the Ultra plan ($960/mo) or Enterprise (pricing). LemonSlice doesn't document built-in memory, knowledge retrieval or business tools, so it can't replace Tavus's agent features on its own. Its performance figures come from its own testing.

Verdict

LemonSlice is the best Tavus alternative when the character itself matters most, such as a full-body mascot, a fictional character or a museum guide that gestures and acts.

How does LemonSlice compare to Tavus?

Tavus's Phoenix-4.5 adds motion through the head, shoulders and torso. LemonSlice's CWM-1 generates the full body, hands and surrounding scene. On speed, LemonSlice's own April 2026 benchmark found its 2.1 Flash model significantly faster than Tavus's earlier Phoenix-4.

The trade-off is agent features. Tavus builds in memory, knowledge, tools and perception. LemonSlice is a rendering layer you pair with your own agent.

5. D-ID

URL: https://www.d-id.com/ai-agents/

Quick summary

  • Not in our evaluation
  • Best use case: Organizations that need to run interactive avatars in their own private cloud or on-premises
  • Biggest limitation: No published per-minute price for live agents
  • Price: From $5.90/mo; credit-based

Pros

D-ID is the only alternative here that publicly documents optional VPC and on-prem deployment (AI Agents). That means the avatar can run in your own cloud account or data center, not on the vendor's servers. It also offers SSO, RBAC and audit logs.

It lists the most security certifications of any tool here: ISO 27001, 27017, 27018, 27799 and 42001, plus SOC 2 (security).

Its agents run on V4 Expressive Visual Agents (launched March 2026). D-ID describes V4 as a diffusion-based model trained on real actors, with sentiment-driven expressions, sub-0.5 s conversational turns and up to 4K output (announcement).

Agents can connect to any LLM, use a RAG knowledge base of up to 5 documents and trigger actions through webhooks. Agentic Videos add a conversational agent to an existing video. For developers, there's a REST API, a LiveKit plugin, an ElevenLabs Agents integration and an Azure Marketplace listing.

Cons

D-ID doesn't publish a per-minute dollar price for live agents. Conversations use credits at 0.5 credit per 15 seconds, and enterprise pricing is custom (pricing). Its knowledge base is limited to 5 documents per agent. It doesn't publish concurrency limits or a language count. Its performance figures come from its own testing.

Verdict

D-ID is the best Tavus alternative for organizations whose security or IT requirements rule out a vendor-hosted service.

How does D-ID compare to Tavus?

Tavus runs as a fully managed service. D-ID documents running the avatar in your own private cloud or on-prem.

Both have strong compliance: Tavus covers SOC 2, HIPAA with BAAs, GDPR and the EU AI Act (CVI page), and D-ID lists five ISO certifications plus SOC 2. Tavus has far more built-in agent features than D-ID's RAG and webhooks, and much clearer pricing.
