You can insert a PDF into PowerPoint as an object, which allows you to display a page or an icon linking to the PDF in your slide.

These steps apply to PowerPoint for Microsoft 365, PowerPoint 2021, 2019, and 2016 on both Windows and Mac.

Insert a PDF into PowerPoint

  1. Open your PowerPoint presentation and select the slide where you want to insert the PDF.
  2. Go to the Insert tab on the ribbon.
  3. Select Object (Windows: in the Text group; Mac: in the Insert menu, choose Object).
  4. In the dialog box, choose Create from File, then click Browse to locate and select your PDF file.
  5. Select OK to insert the PDF as an object. The first page of the PDF will appear on your slide, or you’ll see a PDF icon depending on your version.

Note: Double-clicking the object or icon during your presentation will open the PDF in your default PDF reader. On Mac, inserting PDFs as objects may not display a preview, but the icon will link to the file.

How to present PDFs without the hassle

While inserting PDFs into PowerPoint works, it can be clunky and disrupt your presentation flow when viewers need to open external files.

With Synthesia, you can create engaging video presentations that seamlessly incorporate your PDF content alongside AI avatars who explain the material naturally. All you need to do is upload your PDF to convert it into an AI video.
