Let us explain a rather complex topic in simple(r) terms and decipher the word. 🤓
'Deep' refers to AI technology known as deep learning. 'Fake' is pretty self-explanatory. Both words combined refer to synthetically generating/imitating faces using deep learning technology.
There are several ways to create deepfakes, but in essence, making deepfakes requires training a neural network with video footage, which the trained model will then use to swap out/generate faces.
Sounds too complicated? If we drop the fancy lingo, deepfakes generally work like this: you upload an image/video of a person into an app, the app will then swap out the face with another person's face, and then you download the finished product.
The legality of deepfake technology is a bit of a grey area and varies from use case to use case.
At Synthesia, we take pride in making deepfakes not only legally, but also ethically. How?
- We have strict guidelines about the use of videos generated by our deepfake maker
- We do extensive internal screening to make sure all generated videos adhere to our guidelines
- Creating custom AI avatars of other people without their consent is impossible - the learning data you provide us is unique, and can't be done without explicit consent.
There are a few apps on the market that offer face-swapping by simply uploading a photo or videos. However, you can always tell it's a deepfake by the quality of the finished product - speech and lip movements don't align, the face-swapping looks askew, and there's usually a large watermark on the generated videos/images.
The best deepfake apps, like Synthesia, put countless hours into improving the technology to look as realistic as possible, which is why they usually charge a bit for using the software.
But worry not! You can create a free demo deepfake video to test the technology for yourself.
